In New York City, during the 1940s, WC Handy fell from a subway platform and received a critical head injury. In the last 18 years of his long and productive career, he lived as a blind working businessman, performer, and public figure. In the 1940s, WC Handy founded the WC Handy Foundation for the Blind to support Negro musicians who were blind or vision impaired financially. In keeping with the tradition, his sole surviving grandson, Dr. Carlos R. Handy, and wife reorganized the nonprofit. They revived the foundation in Texas to promote the legacy of W.C.Handy.
